Step 1: I do; You Watch
Step 2: You do; I Watch
Step 3: You do
In order to build an effective team; you must properly train them (I do; you watch). Then give them an opportunity to use their training in a safe environment with positive feedback on strengths & a plan for areas of improvement (You do; I Watch). When necessary repeat steps one & two until they are ready to stand on their own. (You do)
True leaders lead leaders. This means not only do they train their team, give them the authority to operate in that capacity, but they train them to repeat the steps with their team. This means when one is promoted their is always someone ready & prepared to take their place. A true leader can shift into another assignment and their team will carry on. Don’t make the mistake of being a crutch for your team or allowing intimidation to keep you from sharing with your team. Instead empower them to move forward.
